Tikrasis mirties skaičius tikriausiai yra dar didesnis dėl nepaskelbtų atvejų. Daugelis šių mirties atvejų įvyko pavojingose maršrutuose, tokiuose kaip Sacharos dykuma ir Viduržemio jūra. Krizė kyla tuo metu, kai IOM susiduria su finansavimo mažinimu, dėl kurio sustabdomos svarbios pagalbos programos.
